Musing Moment 0080: Unstuck?

Standard

So I might be unstuck… I’m not sure yet.

I think I need to give myself a break. I think I need to stop beating myself up over not having a major goal right now. I’ve already come to the conclusion that I am not going to be making a career change at the moment, so I think I should stop stressing over not having a career goal.

I think I should actually be giving myself credit for continuing to work on my degree. That’s going to take a lot of my time. I don’t think I should worry about having a job, and doing school, and doing a personal project, and possibly free lance, and making sure to have the laundry done and dinner cooked.

You know, I think I can take away the personal / career project aspect of my life and still make a pretty good argument for being busy and not wasting my time. Especially when right now I haven’t figured out the direction I want to go after this new degree. I’m still tossing the idea of the Army around inside of my head. Enlisted more than officer since that would be roughly a four year contract rather than six or more. But again, until this next year and a half is over, it’s just speculation and day dreaming, and that’s well and good, but it’s going to make me want things to be different and for the time being they’re not going to be different.

I think I would be happier focusing my energy somewhere else rather than worrying about things that aren’t important yet.

Ok, so if I’m scratching work off of the list for goals right now, what does that leave me with?

I want my Warrior Dash to be a goal still.

I realized this last night. I haven’t completed it yet. It’s still important to me, and by not including or counting it as a goal I’m devaluing all of the work I am doing to achieve it.

If it doesn’t count as a goal then why am I working so hard for it? If it’s not an achievement then why do it at all?

It is an achievement to me. It is something that I’m going to be proud of once I cross the finish line. I’m going to post pictures all over Facebook and I’m going to blog about it. And I’m going to talk about it to anyone who will listen because it’s going to be a big movement for me.

I don’t care if it’s inevitable, and that the night of Feburary 5th I know I’m going to sleep like crap because I’m going to be so excited and nervous, because I know I’m not going to back down. It may not be a “crazy impossible” goal anymore, but it’s still a goal, and at the moment, for the next 30 days, it’s my main focus. Really my only focus.

And I think that’s how most of this year is going to go. Instead of having several goals going at once like I normally do, it seems that a lot of my goals are going to be linear.

First will be my race. Training for it, and then actually completing it. Once that is done I will return to my dojo. That following Monday actually is when I plan to return.

By the end of the month I want to complete my Kyu 6 test for aikido and begin working on my belts in ernest. I will try to advance through all of the ranks until by the end of the year I am Dan 1.

Through all of that I will be paying down the credit card. I realized that though I will have the card extremely low by the end of February, due to needing to buy things for the apartment once John and Trevor leave, the amount is going to go back up again. So it most likely won’t be paid off completely until about halfway through the year. Which I’m fine with, but since I’m not going to be focusing on career or income related goals, trying to pay both the card off and my car loan is pretty unrealistic and sort of setting myself up for failure, which is unfair.

So, realistic goal, pay off the credit card, for real this time.

I also want to do a second Warrior Dash some time this year. I believe there is a race in North Carolina in June, which is still fairly close to me, but there are other places like Texas which could have races and would let me, potentially, visit friends I haven’t seen in a while.

I could participate in a color run race, or try biking. Not really to win, but just to do it. Because I think they would be fun. I don’t think I want to have any goals with the Lance Orlando fighting. I think I would rather focus on aikido this year. That and school.

Those will be my main goals and along the way I will reestablish the habits I have let slip. The reading a book each month. I want to continue to cross stitch for pleasure rather than trying to turn it into a profitable hobby. I know my stress level is going to go up starting next week with the return to school and having homework to worry about again.

I’m going to need to care for myself so I don’t get burnt out like I did before.

There’s been good news in regards to the apartment situation, and the past few days have been pretty awesome even though I haven’t really written about any of the events that have happened. I’m sure I will later tonight, but I wanted to type all of this out while I had the time to do it and the thoughts in my head.

I may be “stuck” in Florida for now, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t have other things that are important to me. And just because I don’t have nine million things I’m trying to get done doesn’t mean I’m a slacker or letting anyone down.

School is going to be intense on its own. I need to give myself more credit than I do for working on my degree. I also need to put more time into my assignments than I normally do.

So school, racing / becoming a better, fitter me, Dan 1 in aikido, and annihilate the credit card debt. Pretty linear like I said. One domino after the other. One class at a time, one rank at a time, one payment at a time I’ll move forward on all of these things. Each month a slow progression to a larger, bigger destination.

I suppose it helps that it is winter. It’s ok to slow down. It’s ok to regroup. It’s ok to not always be busy or have irons in the fire. It’s ok to sit and not be defined by what project I’m working on.

I think realizing that helped. I am more than my goals, and I think for a little bit I forgot that. Goals are important and they give us direction, but they’re not everything and just like with friends, it’s about quality not quantity.

Maybe this is one of the reasons Winter is hard for me. Maybe I’m not good at sitting still and this is something I should work on. For all that I’m about inner peace and mindfulness maybe I am still missing the big picture. It’s not about being busy. Just like with writing, how it’s ok to not write and how silence is just as important if not more so. Stillness is just as important as action.

Stillness is where we prepare.

Musing Moment 0079: Stuck

Standard

I still feel stuck. I’m bored right now, and that doesn’t help.

I did a Google search for “Things to do when bored” and even those lists don’t help.

Listen to music. Write a story. Do a puzzle. Watch tv. Workout.

No, no, no, no, no, no.

Scrolling through the lists just makes me realize how much I don’t want to do anything. Which is sad. It’s my vacation. I should be doing lots of stuff. Not feeling lost. That’s what this whole thing is supposed to help me fix. It’s supposed to be giving me direction. But the more I think about how I’m going to be in Florida until the end of my degree the more it feels like time is stretching out in front of me, a never ending path that I’ll always be on. Stuck trudging through the same day after day after day of monotony. Always waiting. Always pushing things back.

And no matter what, if I make my degree a “thing”, something I want to do, then I’m here, and I think of here as stuck, so I’m stuck.

Arg.

I almost don’t want to write because right now all I’m doing is complaining. And I’m sort of tired of doing that, too.

I finished the latest cross stitch thing I was working on. I was trying to make a cute top for mason jars. I can’t make it work though. The pattern I have is for a specific jar that a specific company made way back in the day. I suppose I should mention that the design is from a magazine that my grandmother kept. So really I shouldn’t be surprised that the times have changed and that I’m either really bad at Google searching for what I’m trying to find, or that this is dated and that if I really want to do the thing I’m trying to do that I’m going to need to use different dimensions.

That’s all well and good, but it means that the work I have currently done was sort of pointless. Unless finding out that it won’t work the way I want it to currently counts, which as long as it’s a learning experience then it’s not a waste, but I really could have done without the hit to my already non-existent motivation.

I need to make the frame for Clavan’s gift, and I suppose I could frame this cross stitch as well since I can’t use it as the mason jar topper, but making frames is still something new to me, and at the moment I’m 100% confident that I’ll mess it up somehow and I really just want something to work at the moment.

At the moment I have no other projects going on. There aren’t any I really want to start either. Every time I get a stray thought of something I could do I shoot it down. It’s like my brain is stuck on “reject” mode. Nothing seems fun or inspiring. Nothing seems worth it.

I suppose the up side is that this isn’t depression. It’s pure apathy. Sluggishness. I don’t think it’s necessarily laziness. I’ve been up and productive all day. I just don’t feel fulfilled. None of the things I have done have moved me forward in life so what was the point?

I guess not having goals lined up is a big factor. I don’t know what I should be doing, so I don’t know if I’m using my time well. Sitting on Pinterest for an hour doesn’t seem like the best investment of my time, though… just a guess. I’m pretty sure some poor tree or batch of algae is regretting creating oxygen for me to waste in my directionless state.

I don’t think I’m going to find any answers tonight. I’m not sure if tomorrow is going to be any better. I feel caged. Trapped within my own skin. I know it’s only a matter of time before I figure it all out. I know myself well enough to see the cycle as a whole. But I hate this part. I hate the waiting, the not knowing. I hate being still. And yet nothing feels right. No action suggested is the right action, and so I continue to sit, motionless, waiting for the “right” thing to magically show itself.

And when it does it will seem so obvious, so “right” that I’ll wonder how I wasn’t able to think of it sooner. How it was staring me in the face the whole time.

But I’m not there yet. Where ever “there” is. And that’s frustrating. It makes me feel like I’m wasting time. I should enjoy the present. The here and now. I should enjoy the peace and stillness.

Sometimes that’s so much harder than it should be.

Musing Moment 0078: The Thing – Round 2

Standard

I’m trying to figure out what’s important to me, what I should be doing, and I think I did a pretty good job of it in my last Musing Moment post. I determined that I’m going to be finishing my degree and that for the time being I need to stay in Florida.

I also reaffirmed my dedication to my race. It’s not so much that my resolve was wavering. More that apathy and depression were eating at my motivation. Having figured out the main points of my life helped bring back that motivation.

Ok… so maybe motivation is too strong a word to use for where I was at during my last post, but after meeting with Terri this morning, and the few biking trips I’ve had the past days, I can definitely say that I am motivated again.

So all of that is well and good, but it still doesn’t really leave me with a lot to do. Nothing move me forward in any real direction. Nothing that will help me feel fulfilled in the short term. All of this stuff is the larger picture, and it’s great to have the overview, but what am I going to be trying to do these next three months let alone this year?

I’ve been going through the 30-Day Challenge by Chalene Johnson on fast forward mode. Really the first week is all I’m interested in since that’s where you align yourself with your priorities and then construct goals around them.

I’ve gone through the areas of my life and evaluated them on the 1-10 scale. 1 totally sucking and 10 being amazing beyond belief.

Physical Health – 7

I’m doing really well in this area, but by doing well I see how far I still want to go. And maybe this is an unfair score on my part. Maybe an 8 would have been better.

Emotional Health – 5

I still feel low here, though not for the same reasons as last time. Zane and I are having issues. There’s still the stress with my mom I need to figure out. I really ought to figure out some life goals as well so I can have a sense of purpose.

Environment – 5

To be fair, the apartment is the same as it ever was. I’m just ready for everyone to move out. Now that everything is decided I want for it to happen. I don’t want to wait. I want to rearrange and clean, and not have everyone else’s crap in the way. This honestly isn’t something I can change, and the faster I just accept the fact that the lease doesn’t end until the end of February, the faster this number can go back to being higher.

Financial – 8

Originally I had a 7, but I really think this area is much better than it was and deserves an 8. Zane has a job again, I’m making large payments on the card. Zane is going to start paying me back in the New Year. I’m going to be getting a raise at work once I have my review (at least I better if they want me to stay). So things are looking up. I might even have freelance coming in.

Leisure – 8

Right now this is pretty high. I count my biking to work as leisure because it helps me unwind. I’m cross stitching fairly often. Taking time off from school has given me time to enjoy down time where I’m not constantly working on something. It’s been nice. It’s going to end soon since classes start up in January. But for now, this is an 8. XD

Friends / Family – 7

I think I’m doing alright here. I’m staying in touch with some core people better than I have been. I could always be staying in touch with more people more often, but I think I’m doing alright all things considered. I haven’t completely secluded myself away and ignored people. Just partially. : D

Significant Other – 5

Zane and I are having issues. But we know we’re having issues, and we’re in the process of trying to fix that.

Career – 5

I’m still disenchanted with work. Part of this whole figuring out my goals and priorities is to help bring back the spark I used to feel, even if it ends up being in a different area.

Personal Growth – 5

I had to do a Google search just to make sure I was thinking of this right. Personal Growth is skills and development… I want to be going to the dojo. I want to be participating in the stage fighting. I want to be doing more things, other things. At the same time I’m doing a lot to improve myself… So I don’t know why this rates low in my head, but it does.

Spiritual Growth – 5

After all this time I still want to put more focus here.

From all of this I was able to figure out that currently my intrinsic priority, the one that comes more naturally to me, is physical health. I got that down to a science.

My key priority, where I think I should be focusing my time and effort, is personal growth. Personal growth would factor into my emotional health, it would hopefully impact my relationship with Zane in a positive way, it would help with my career, as well as my spiritual growth. By improving myself, focusing on me, I could, potentially, bring more balance to the other areas of my life.

Great. Two really big steps down! Onward to goals!

All I need to do is come up with 10 goals that I want to achieve this year. 10 really cool, crazy awesome, almost mildly impossible goals…

Goals…

And this is where I’m stuck. What do I want to do?

Um… nothing. I want to sit here and be an apathetic ball of apathy…

Left Brain: Just so you know… that’s not going to help you feel better.

Right Brain: Screw you and the horse you rode in on!

Seriously I sat in front of my computer for a good thirty minutes and only came up with three things. How hard is it to figure out things that you want to do? Apparently really hard…

I ended up taking a step back. I made a cup of coffee (My second one. Shhhhhh. Don’t tell anyone >.<; ), took out my notebook, and went outside to sit on the porch and brainstorm.

Ok, so goals. Goals are normally based around things that we find important. They’re an achievement of sorts. Alright so what do I find important right now? Health, family, happiness, and finical stability were what I came up with.

Awesome, lets break that down a little bit more.

What falls under health? Activities, food, fulfillment.

What activities? Biking, running, yoga, aikido, taekwondo, the Lance Orlando stuff, races. Stuff like that. Stuff I like doing, or things I want to try doing like parkour classes and archery.

Food? Eating healthy and fresh stuff. Finding new recipes to try, new restaurants to go to. I like the idea of food nights where people come over for games and eating. I used to do that in college and even though I’m an introvert, it fulfilled me to cook for everyone. I also enjoy eating dinner while watching a show with Zane. Actually with most of my companions. It’s something that helps me feel connected with them.

Cool. Good list so far for health.

What about happiness? Happiness I think is tied more closely with memories, so I want to make memories I guess. I want to have fun and do things that I feel are worthwhile. I want to travel and try new things. I want to indulge in active hobbies. I want to do more arts and crafts. I want to learn to sew my own cloths.

Financial stability is sort of self-explanatory. I want to have less debt and more money. Working less would be great while I’m at it. I have the Bank of America card still. After that is my car loan, then student loans, then the money I owe my mom for helping to cover my student loans. Fun times. Finding goals which bring in additional income would be nice.

And last, family. Being near them, visiting them, being involved in their lives. Communicating more frequently would be nice.

I’m still not sure if that gives me a whole lot to work with as far as the whole year goes.

I don’t want to say, “Work on Digital Arts and Design degree” because that’s lame. I’m already going to be working on that, and there’s no real end for it this year. It’s a lame, nebulous goal, that’s going to happen eventually. There’s nothing daunting or really noteworthy about getting a second degree. It’s just another piece of paper.

I don’t want, “Run a Warrior Dash” on my list either because that’s going to happen. It’s not really a challenge. I’m going to go. it’s going to be accomplished. The goals I’m supposed to be coming up with are supposed to be daring. Maybe saying I will run competitively for my June race would be a goal worth listing, but I don’t think I really want my races to be about competing. I want them to be for fun. Inner peace and happiness type of a thing. A goal like “win a race” isn’t in line with my happiness priority.

Left Brain: Damnit! Can’t you be less picky and just come up with a random handful of stuff you want to do…

Right Brain: No. Because that would be easy. Also, fuck you.

My right brain is so snarky today. : /

I have more sort term things, habits I want to create, than goals I want to reach.

I want to go back to reading a book each month. I want to go back to completing a career related project each week, and a personal project each month. I want Zane and I to have goals together for improving our relationship.

Long term I want to pay off my car loan this year. I want to reach Dan 1 rank in aikido. That’s the first level of black belt. I want to reach Dan 1 in taekwondo as well. And that’s pretty much where I’m at. Those three goals would be pretty intense. And maybe I should be happy with just those three for now. I feel like this year is going to be a lot of waiting. Waiting to finish my degree so I can move on to other things. Family related things.

I could work a bit on the stage fighting thing. I have to pass certain tests to be able to do stage play with certain weapons. I have to pass unarmed before I can do staves. I have to do staves before I can do spears or swords. It might be fun to try actually passing to staves, which is basically the jo in aikido, and participating in a performance. I’m not all that set on it though.

I can’t move yet, so I can’t do much in the family area. At least it feels like I can’t. I can make long, long term goals, but there’s nothing I can really do right now. I could save up and go out and visit, but then I doubt I could pay off the car. Not unless I started pulling in a lot more money.

I could make an Etsy store or something, but do I really want to be doing cross stitch or something similar, a hobby, to make money? Would that take away the fun? Would it be worth at least trying?

I could also fill out the Frederator contract that I’ve had since last year so I could pull in money from YouTube. I have no career related goals. I have no goals to help improve my income.

So I guess for now, I’m sort of stuck here. I need to do some introspective digging and until I unearth the buried treasure of what it is I want to do with my life I’m going to continue to feel sort of stuck. : /

So much lame.

Daily Post 063: Recaping ’til Today

Standard

Fair warning. Not proof read. Please don’t kill me. >.<;

I’m about an hour behind where I wanted to be today, but I’ve gotten a lot more done than I thought I would, so I guess it evens out.

My last post started as a daily post but quickly turned into a Musing Moment type of post. It’s the beginning of my reconstruction phase. I like the way that word feels. It doesn’t make it seem like a negative thing. I’m not lost and searching for my soul. It’s an active word, a strong word. It brings to mind planning and intention. Determination. It’s a fitting word I think.

So yeah, I got a lot of stuff figured out yesterday which left me tired. And since that post spanned two days, I’m not really 100% sure what I’ve covered and what I haven’t. I’m going to briefly recap a bit of Christmas and the following days, and hopefully I don’t double up on all that much stuff.

Christmas Eve found Zane and I eating tacos and watching anime while I franticly worked to finish my commission. I wasn’t able to that night and had to use part of Christmas morning to finish it off. Zane and I had bought a duck for Christmas day, which we baked. Not exactly the Turduckin we had talked about earlier in the year, but duck is awesome, so it was still good. It also gave us something special and different for the day.

I started a new cross stitch pretty much as soon as I finished the commission. I loved working on it, and I feel like it came out well, but I was tired of working with the same colors on such a large piece. I was tired of working on a large piece in general. I wanted to do something small, cute, and colorful so I could hold something in my hands.

The day was pretty low key. We didn’t do much. I messaged the people I wanted to, and I got to talk to my mom for a bit and told her thank you for my Christmas box. I didn’t tell her about crying as I opened it. I’m sure she knows that I did because she knows me.

I wrote my post about my mom later that evening which meant more tears, but it was cathartic.

Saturday was another low day. I didn’t have a lot of energy. Zane was itchy though. He wanted to be out of the house, so we made plans for lunch. We stopped by the post office so I could mail a few cards out, then stopped by the bank so I could deposit the check I had gotten from my younger brother for the storage unit. Not sure if I mentioned it, but he paid me $150, so he’s paid up until the end of February, which should be when we’re getting rid of the storage unit because everyone is moving out of the apartment.

Still not really sure about that game plan. Trevor and Danielle are still planning on moving out, but John has been away for the past week, so we’re not sure if he is still planning on moving in with his girlfriend. I’m not going to let myself stress over it though. February is still a ways away and I have other things on my mind at the moment. To the back burner you go.

Zane and I tried going to chick Fil A for lunch but it was packed. Not surprising really. We ended up going to our sports bar instead. And at the moment I type “our” without the tension I have felt about that in the past. It feels more integrated right now. More appropriate.

We made plans to see Star Wars later in the evening with his brother, Uke, and Trevor. We came back home after eating. I remember he packed a bowl of shisha, but I can’t remember the flavor. Marcus and I had been chatting off and on through text messages about meeting up to give him AJ’s gift. That ended up happening around 5pm.

She super loved the commission, and Marcus gave me $100 instead of $75, I know that is still way under what I should have charged, but it was a great learning experience, and I’m happy with how it turned out. Maybe next time I’ll stick to fair pricing. Zane was a little annoyed with me because I essentially created two designs, created the pattern, stitched the commission, cleaned it, framed it and even provided the frame that was used. All for $100. And even then, that wasn’t the amount I was expecting to get. I was expecting $75.

When looking at it that way, how I literally put in over 40 hours worth of work into it, yeah, I can see why he’s frustrated with me. I always sell myself short. I also normally underestimate how involved something is going to be, which we decided wasn’t a dependability issue, but more of a judgment issue.

That made me feel better since I was having doubts about being a dependable person since I wasn’t able to get the commission done before Christmas.

I ended up having a bit of a … thing? … with Frank. It actually really hurt and I almost let it mess up my night.

Frank has been planning a card night since before the holiday break. Since I didn’t know what was going on with my family I never solidified plans to actually go, but he kept reminding me and saying if I was in town that I was welcome.

I got a message from him while I was out giving the commission to Marcus and AJ. When I replied that I wouldn’t be going he said that he was sorry his plans were so last minute, oh wait, they weren’t (insert : p emote) and to enjoy the movie.

It felt snarky to me. I know I should have let him know sooner that I wasn’t going to be there, but I felt like his message wasn’t nice, or fair. I feel like I hurt his feelings and his comment was his retaliation against it. It still sucked. A lot.

After talking to Zane about it I sent an apology, since that’s really all I can do. But it leaves me in a weird spot, and I haven’t figured out what I want to do about it.

We ended up going to the movies and even though I haven’t seen all of the Star Wars movies, and even though I’m not a huge Star Wars fan, I actually really enjoyed the movie. The VFXs are awesome, and there’s tons of practical FXs as well, which I sort of have a greater appreciation for. I felt the pacing of the movie was done well, and that the character development was decent. There was also a lot of non-verbal communication. A lot was said through body language, and facial expression, rather than overly dramatic dialogue.

After the movie Zane, Uke, and I came back to the apartment and chatted about it for a while. Eventually I couldn’t stay awake any longer and left the conversation. Zane came to bed a bit later, after Uke and left.

Sunday started as an icky day. I woke up sad. I woke up feeling sorry for myself. Zane is having to work through some stuff with Nic and his plans for going out to California to visit in March, so I really think for the most part we were feeding off of each other. We noticed it Saturday while at lunch. I guess that’s a downside to two empaths being around each other.

Anyway, the morning was rough, but ended up getting better. I finished my little cross stitch. I need to wash it still, but I will have a picture up soon. I went through all of my cross stitch books looking for new things to do. I am going to be donating most of them away. I don’t want the patterns any more. I’m not going to actually complete them, so they’re just sitting around doing nothing. I would rather someone else be able to get some use out of them.

I did find a few individual patterns that I want to keep, so I packed those books into my backpack and then headed out to school. I wanted to get some space, and both Zane and I thought that would be a good idea.

I got a chicken sandwich from Wendy’s on my way to work. I was the only one there, which was exactly what I wanted.

I finished writing my Musing Moment before doing anything else. That took a while, but I’m glad for it. It made me feel better, less sad and lost feeling. It made it easier to want to do more things. Productive things.

I went through my work email since I’ve been away for the week. I might be able to count my Vimeo tutorials and Creative Crash scripts as experience. Donna had emailed me asking for verification and links to my profiles. That would be fantastic. I would have four years of experience then, at least experience the school would count, because, you know, teaching the content you’re qualified to teach doesn’t count as experience…

Oh. Total tangent that has nothing to do with anything that I have typed about so far. On Christmas I talked to Allison, my best friend from high school. She finally got engaged. Wooo. I seriously feel like the only person left who hasn’t gotten married or had a kid. But you know what, I’m pretty ok with that.

Anyway, back to where I was. I took screenshots of my account settings, which shows when my accounts became active as well as providing links to everything I felt was relevant. So we’ll see what happens with that.

I scanned the images I wanted to keep from the cross stitch magazine and the booklets. I posted the image of my commission to Word Press and Facebook. I had a cup of coffee while doing all of that, which was nice. The one I had this morning wasn’t all that awesome since I was sad feeling and mildly having a spat with Zane.

Once I was done with everything I wanted to do at school I packed up and headed back home. I sent a text message to Zane to let him know I would be back shortly. He called to see if I had eaten yet. I told him about the sandwich I had had a while ago, but that I wasn’t all that hungry. He said he had gotten pizza and that I could have a slice, just not all of it since he was going to be using it for lunches this week at work.

He also said that I didn’t have to go back out and do the laundry. He said we could do that Monday night once he got back home. That totally made my night since I wasn’t looking forward to having to go back out. I mean, I was going to do it, but that doesn’t mean I really wanted to do it.

Instead, I got to come home and create a few new cross stitch pattern files with my nifty MacStitch software. The patterns I had scanned were old images, before there was really any sort of software to make the markings neat and consistent. So I used the printed copy as a guide to recreate the pattern essentially. I’m not sure how this works with copy right. I’m not sure if they are old enough to be non-copy written any more, or if that’s a thing, or what.

Since it’s for personal use I don’t think I’m breaking any rules. I think it would be an issue if I started trying to sell them off as my own. But even then, I’ve made my own changes to the patterns. Change the color, adding boards… Ehh… I don’t know. I guess until someone comes up and says, “Hey, I’ll make you independently wealthy if you stitch this for me,” it’s sort of academic and just playing the “What if” game.

Independently wealthy is pretty tempting though…

So that was pretty much the rest of my night. I started a new project. Another little cute one. I have an idea to turn it into a full on project, but that’s a super secret squirrel thing at the moment. Until I get it solidified in my head I really don’t want to say much more about it. It’s going to be for my mom though. Muahahahaha. >: 3

I haven’t done much for my Soul Reconstruction yet today, and it’s already 1:30. I’ve been up since 10:30. I had breakfast. I unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher. I wrote down a long jumbled list of things I wanted to do. I didn’t worry about order or organization. Just scribbled things down as they came to me.

I had a message from Zane asking to look up curry recipes for duck since he wanted to do something along those lines. That led to an hour or so of me looking at recipes in general. I’ve gotten a new bookmark folder on my Chrome bar with things I want to try. I went through and found specifically paleo recipes that I thought both Zane and I could appreciate.

I’m not a hard core follower of the paleo diet. Sorry, I like cheese, and I swear if you take my coffee creamer away you won’t survive… But I like the idea of eating non-processed foods more frequently, and to be honest, a lot of the recipes are crazy simple and so flavorful it’s not even funny.

It’s weird. When I gave up soda and started to drink solely water I realized how sweet water actually is. How refreshing and sustaining something so simple is. And now when I drink soda all I can taste are the chemicals, salts, and how it makes me feel gross and icky afterwards, especially if I drink a lot of it.

I guess food is the same. The more I cook my own food, the more I stay away from fast food, the more I realize how much I don’t actually enjoy going out to eat all that much anymore. How bland and flavorless everything is. How everything is fried. I would rather go to something like the sushi café, or my sports bar because I know they serve better quality food. And I suppose I should say when I get wings from my sports bar I get them grilled instead of fried.

I like eating fresh things because they make me feel better, and maybe part of that is all inside my head and more placebo than real science, but I honestly don’t care. If it makes me feel better, even if it’s just a mental trick, then it’s worth it.

So yeah, I have a bunch of things I want to try making. Zane had already picked out the meals for the coming week. Since I’m still on vacation I asked for tuna lunches. Something quick and simple and cheap. We’re going to be doing Shepard’s Pie again since we still have veggies for that. The duck curry which will use the legs and wings, and then duck sandwiches for the breast meat. I also took the extra chili from last week out of the freezer, so there’s about four servings of that as well.

After playing around with recipes I went through and cleaned up my downloads folder on my computer. Something that I have been neglecting for far too long. I went through my DropBox folder as well, cleaning, organizing, and deleting things. After that it was my Google Drive’s turn to be tidied up. I went through my personal email account, deleting messages up until July so my folders can stay clean. Next time I’m on campus I will do the same for my work email.

I need to make backups of my DropBox and Google Drive, but that’s going to happen later.

I have my to-do list restructured with the things I want to get done. I’m going to be biking to the bank to deposit the money Zane gave me for his portion of the car insurance. I need to ship off the box with my phone to Verizon for the trade in credit. From there I want to go to UPS to ship of my final cross stitch gift. By then I’ll most likely be thirsty and hungry so I plan to stop at 711 for a salad and Gatorade before biking back home. That will be about the length of going to the gym and back, minus the gym. And there will be stops to break up the length so I think it will be a good introduction back into my physical discipline.

It’s sunny outside, which it has been for a few days. There’s still been rain here and there, but it hasn’t been full on cloudy days. There’s been more sun than rain, and I think that’s helping today. It’s a little windy but I’m hoping that doesn’t make the bike ride super rough. It’s going to be my first ride since getting the bike back last Sunday. I’m looking forward to it.

But that would be the extent of my running around until Zane gets home. We will most likely do laundry and grocery shopping tonight. I know at least the laundry needs to get done since he doesn’t have anything clean to wear for tomorrow. Grocery would be nice as well so we could do the Shepard’s Pie tonight, though there is the chili we could make do with until tomorrow.

So yeah… full, productive day lined up. I just finished my cup of coffee. I wasn’t allowed to drink it until I drank my bottle of water first. I’ve been slacking about that so I had to make sure I worked in before the bike ride some how.

Anyway, I’m really just rambling now. Procrastinating maybe… I’ll stop doing that and get a move on. I don’t want to run out of daylight.

Musing Moment 0077: The Thing – Round 1, Fight!

Standard

I got interrupted while I was writing yesterday. This is what I was able to type out before Zane woke up and the day got started with no opportunity to sneak away and finish my thoughts.

Not much has changed in 11 hours. I stayed up a bit longer after my last post. I had begun work on a new cross stitch. The Christmas dragon from Dragon Dreams. Jen always puts out a freebie chart as a thank you gift to the stitching community. If you’re interested in seeing it check it out here. She has requested that it not be posted anywhere other than Facebook and for it to only be “Shared” through the Facebook platform, which is why I’m only linking to it.

It’s super adorable though, so check it out if you’re interested in stitching a small, cute Christmas dragon.

You would think after doing nothing but stitching for a week straight that I would be so sick of stitching I would rather stab my eyes out with my needles then begin a new project. This one is for me though, so it’s different. It’s the first project in a while that I have stitched purely for the purpose of stitching. It’s not a gift. It’s not a commission. It’s simply because I want to make something cute. So I am.

I got most of the way through it, and thought about working on it more after my post. But I was tired. Drained. I think I got something like seven more stitches done, if that, before going back to the room and sleeping next to Zane.

He got up shortly after I came to bed since he’s doing cat naps. But eventually he came back and we slept the rest of the night together. He’s still asleep right now. I’ve been up for a little bit. I’ve unloaded the dishwasher, loaded it back up again, and have already had one up of coffee.

I’ve been having a lot of coffee lately, mostly so I could stay awake and keep working on Marcus’ project. It felt like I was back in college again, working on my final projects, staying up insane hours so I could get them done to the level of quality I would be happy with. I don’t miss those days all that much, and this reminded me of why.

I don’t like being tired. I don’t like that for almost a week the most sunlight I got was the five or ten minutes I would sit on the porch. I don’t regret the choices I made. But I wasn’t taking care of my body and I know that. I know the choices I made are going to make my race goal suffer.

It’s over now though. I will hopefully be giving Marcus the framed piece later today. I still need to iron it but I’m letting the fabric drip dry a bit before doing that.

Yesterday was actually pretty relaxing, though I guess you wouldn’t have gotten that impression from my last post.

Thursday night I ended up going out to Taco Bell for Zane and me. He paid, giving me his card before I left the apartment. Neither of us wanted to cook anything, and not many places were going to be open. But tacos sounded good. Grungy food for my last stint of stitching. My last all nighter.

I think that is going to be a new tradition for me. I don’t really have any, other than family gatherings around the holidays. We don’t have a traditional meal we always cook. We don’t have an event like going out to see the Christmas lights, or going ice-skating and drinking hot chocolate. We’re really sort of boring like that I guess. We just hangout and chit-chat. More often than not we play board games and interact with one another.

Well, my Christmas traditions are going to be Christmas tacos because tacos, and then cooking a duck for Christmas day.

While I was stitching we watched Magical Girl Madoka from beginning to end. All 12 episodes. I enjoyed it. We watched the Christmas special of Doctor Who as well. I thought the episode was amazing, but then anything with River Song in it is good.

Zane started playing Final Fantasy Type 0. I watched for a little bit. I took a nap. I messaged several people on my phone and Facebook. I messaged Mother Earth and I had a conversation with RB. It was good to know both of them are doing well, even though I’m not really sure they are doing well. There is so much more that goes into “wellness” then the ability to type on a phone.

It eased something inside of me to talk to both of them. It made me feel less alone and lost. Though to be fair I still have no idea what I want, where I’m going, or what I’m doing. Knowing that my pseudo-family is still there, still reachable, made me feel a bit more stable.

That was pretty much all of yesterday aside from my post, which I wrote after Zane had gone to sleep. I figured it would be pretty emotional. It felt like that was what I needed. I didn’t want to cry in front of him. Much like now. I’ve already started a bit of my soul search, and I really don’t like that phrase because I don’t think it fits, but I’m not sure what else to call it.

Healing? Recovery? Mmmm, recovery maybe. Adjustment… Reformation. Reconstruction, actually. Yes. That feels better.

I’m having to reconstruct myself around this new information. It changes the blue prints that I had for my life. It changes the composition completely.

For the past months my goal as been my spiritual health. I was losing myself. Work was bleeding me out. I was sacrificing the gym and the dojo. The stress with Zane kept me from recovering fully when I came home. There was all this worry and stress and no outlet for it. No way to recharge and purge the negativity that was building in my life and I kept carrying that weight from one day to the next.

But I’ve been changing that. I’ve been doing more for myself. I’ve been sticking up for myself at work. I state when something is negative for me and I stick to my guns. I don’t back down just to make it easier or less confrontational. I think about myself, too, and what I am able to handle and what I would be ok with later, not just in the moment. That’s helped a lot.

I make time for physical activity. The biking to work helps. It gives me roughly 40 minutes to an hour of alone time each day. It helps me be prepared for work. It gives me a way to burn off some steam after a rough day. It’s improving my health and my connectedness with myself. It’s moving me towards goals that I have always wanted to reach.

I feel like I have done a lot to improve my spirit, and I think overall that I am in a much better spot than I was three months ago.

But now there is this Thing. I don’t know what to call it other than that. The Thing. In my head it is dark, creepy, drippy and gross. Black and green and brown and rotting, oozing with fangs and claws and horrible red eyes full of hate and evil. The Thing that I can’t fight. The thing that is smoke and dust and vaporous.

And of course that’s where I got interrupted… right at the good point. So now that I have reread what I was thinking at the moment I can move forward with the post and hopefully complete the train of thought I was having.

The Thing. The stroke. The invisible enemy that I will never be able to face, or kill, or destroy. In my previous post I mentioned how I wish there was something that I could hate. Some physical form that I could bash my fists bloody against. But there isn’t.

And normally I would feel bad about wanting to hate something, someone. How the thought of violence normally makes me ill. But right now I don’t care. I want to hate. I want there to be a focal point that I can focus all of this negativity on like an evil ray of death until it explodes. But there’s nothing. Just facts. Just life.

It’s frustrating knowing that logically there is nothing wrong, that I have not been wronged, that things are actually pretty good and that I should be grateful, but feeling everything that is opposite of logical and rational.

It leaves me not knowing how to handle myself. I understand that I have the right to feel the way I feel. Everyone, no matter their situation, has a right to feel. At the same time I feel like my mentality is “wrong”. I shouldn’t be looking at my Christmas box as the last gift I will ever receive from my mom. I shouldn’t focus on the fact that she had (past tense) a stroke.

I should focus on the fact that she is still alive. That she is getting better. That she is with Jason and Lio. I should focus on the fact that she loves me. That she raised me to be a strong person. There are so many things I should be focusing on, but in the face of The Thing all I can think about is how much I want to destroy it. To make it not exist, to never have happened.

I feel all of this rage, and hate, and darkness inside myself. I feel it turn me into a vicious person and I want so much for there to be something to unleash this viciousness on, and there isn’t so instead it turns to sadness and I feel helpless. All of this rage and power, and there is nothing, nothing, deserving of it. And so it sits and festers. Poisoning my here and now.

I honestly do feel like parts of my world are falling apart. Shattering because the ideas and futures I had envisioned are different now. The ones I had don’t exist, can’t exist, never existed to begin with. And yet it feels as if they have broken, fallen, shattering into a thousand pieces and now I have to reconstruct those areas. Repair, mend.

Reconstruct.

I suppose in a way that is good. It brings to mind something that has been demolished. Utterly obliterated. But that means the ground is leveled and I can create whatever I want to now. I could use the shattered pieces, making a mosaic. Or I could come in with a giant broom, sweeping all of the pieces away before carting in new material, making something completely different in defiance of having the old monuments ruined.

Me: Fine. Fuck you, Life. I’ll make something even better!

I can do whatever I want.

The more I hate and loath The Thing, the more it grows. The more its dark form looms over me. The more power I give it. The more it steals away from me. From my now. And I’m tired of giving it that power.

And right now, those words sound big and strong, and I might even sort of feel it, but I know it is far from over. I know I’m going to have more days where I cry and feel sad. Like today. Like how this morning I woke up and I knew that it was going to be rough. And it has been. Zane and I fought. He’s going through his own stuff so it’s been hard for both of us to be patient with one another.

I’m currently sitting at school alone. Completely alone. The only sound filling the air is that of my fingers tapping way at the keyboard. I love it. There’s no music. Nothing for me to process other than my thoughts.

I’m allowed to let go here. No pretending. No worrying about anything. Just silence.

I want to build something new for my future. I want to be destructive. I want to throw things, shattering the windows to the buildings. Vandalizing. Annihilating until there is nothing left. I want the world to burn around me as I burn on the inside until everything is ash. I want to fires to roar as I scream out my pain, hearing the cry of the world echo my own.

At the same time I want to hide away in my cave, so far away from people, from everything, that nothing hurts any longer. My ice cave. The place where there’s only coldness. Calm. Tired. Slow. So heavy, too heavy to move. Too much effort to do anything other than huddle on the floor, eyes shut and frosted breath passes through blue lips. There’s nothing, no pain. Just the cold as my companion keeping everything numb, functional, alive yet not living.

Which is better. The fire of rage, or the ice of sadness? They’re not really opposites. Anger and sadness. But they’re opposite on the emotional spectrum for me. One is cold and internal, while the other is hot and external. They negate each other when I feel them in equal amounts. They leave me lukewarm and neutral. Square one.

So if I want to destroy everything. If I want to start over new, where do I want to start? What’s important? What’s the foundation? What am I trying to build?

I don’t know.

Family is important. I still feel a sense of obligation to my financial goals though. I don’t want to throw them to the way side. I still want them to be important to me. But I think I want them to be important because I feel like they should be important, not because they actually are anymore… if that makes any sense.

I still feel like I should focus on my health goals, but again those seem so much lower than what they were just a few weeks ago. So much less important. Honestly I haven’t done anything even close to resembling physical activity for the past week. And I should feel bad about that. I know that the longer I wait the harder it’s going to be to start again. But right now I don’t care. In this moment, I honestly don’t care about my race.

What is my number 1 priority? Family. Specifically my mom.

Ok… so what do I want to do?

I don’t know… I guess be near her? I don’t like how I can’t go visit her for the weekend anymore. I don’t like how I feel left out. My mom is with my nephew, older brother, and sister in law. John is over in Germany. My cousin is still in South Carolina along with a few friends. Most of my close friends are west coast-ish though, and I’m so very far away from them.

Zane wants to move to California. Not that it really matters, but I do not want to lose his companionship yet. I still don’t think we’re meant for forever, and I know I’ll never be Nic to him. But right now, with everything else going on, I really would like for that area of my life, my relationship, to stay stable, at least as stable as it has ever been.

So everything seems to be pointing me to west coast, but is that where I really want to be?

Not really. I actually like the east coast. I like the south. I don’t mind Florida I just hate how so few of the people I cherish are here. I don’t like snow. I don’t like the cold.

I guess part of it is worrying that I won’t like whatever place I move to. It will be new. Different. I won’t know the streets. I won’t know where there’s a good Chinese place. The west coast doesn’t have the grocery store chain I like, so I’ll have to figure out a new store.

So much new.

My mom is worth moving for. There are a handful of people who are worth moving for. But that’s a lot. For me it’s a huge thing. This isn’t moving to a new apartment in the Orlando area. This would be a completely different state, different area, in a way a different world.

But yes, there are a few people who are worth that, and there are a few areas that I would be ok with. I think Vegas might be one of them. I like hiking there. I like the archery range that I went to with my older brother. I like the thought of being near my family.

I like the thought of feeling included.

Ok. So family is a priority, and I want to be near them.

I would need a new job. One that paid way better than my current one so I could handle my expenses.

What type of job would I want?

I really don’t want one. And I know that sounds awful. I want to feel like what I am doing is worth it. Worth my time. Worth the stress. I want to make people better. I want to feel like I make a difference.

I could try to find a teaching job out in Vegas. Most likely would not be pulling in the type of money I want. But it would have a higher chance of meeting the marks I have for a job I want.

I could try to get a job with a simulations company. Continue to use my Computer Animation degree. That could get me closer to the income I want, but I don’t like working on other people’s stuff. Point blank. I love what I am able to do, I just don’t like it when it’s an obligation. I don’t think I would be happy using my degree unless I was doing freelance work, which comes with its own pile of garbage to deal with.

I could continue on my Digital Arts and Design degree and then get more of a design related job in Vegas or California or Texas. That would require me to finish the degree first, so I guess a good question with that is do I want to finish the degree?

Yeah, sort of. I think it’s silly to give up on it halfway through. I know when classes start back up in a week that my stress / workload is going to go back up. I guess I really should look at what classes I have left to take so I know what’s coming up. What my lighter months will be so I have breaks to look forward to. There’s a lot I could do to make the next year easier as far as schooling is concerned.

There’s also the choice of being able to switch into the Web Design degree which is actually what I’m finding most interesting at the moment. Creating websites and such. It’s fun. I created my own, sort of, through Wix. I’ve gotten more comfortable with HTML5 and CSS. I also love Adobe Illustrator and being able to create custom forms and resumes. That’s going back to design work though.

Original question. Do I want to finish the degree? …. Yes. Yes I want to finish my degree. I want to not back down from that challenge.

Ok, so the whole moving thing really doesn’t matter right this second because I wouldn’t be able to leave the job for the duration of the degree. I have to be employed here for the degree to be free. And I don’t want it bad enough to pay for it.

Do I want to stay longer and get the Web Design degree? Maybe? I don’t really know. I guess it will depend on where I’m at in a year. It might be a bit longer than a year actually because I’ve failed two or three classes, and I know that sounds bad. Almost as bad as saying I don’t want to work. But the first time I failed I was sick for the first week of the month, and the fourth week Mother Earth was put into ICU. The second time I failed on purpose because I felt like I was letting fear consume me. I feared my projects. I feared that they wouldn’t be good enough, I feared the white pages any time I opened my programs to start my work. So I purposely failed so I could try again without fear. I refused to doubt myself. I refused to worry. I would make whatever it was I wanted to make and I would be happy with my effort regardless of the outcome.

And this last class. The one I took before my leave of absence. I am fairly certain I failed that one because I was tired of the stress. It was while I was on vacation for mental health. Work and school are two separate things, and while I was on vacation from work, I was not on vacation from school. I tried getting the interruption of training approved in time so I wouldn’t fail the class, but it didn’t work out, and I don’t regret not doing the work because I needed that time to regroup.

So, yes. I’m pretty sure I’m three months behind my original graduation date. And I’m ok with that because I’m ok with the three times I’ve stepped away from school. I’ve written about it numerous times. I’m not getting this degree for my career. I’m getting it because it’s fun, a hobby, because while I’m working for the school it’s free, and because it is a nice compliment for my current degree. I’m doing it because I can, honestly. Not because I care about the grades I get. And a few short years ago that would have driven the perfectionist in me insane. Zero fucks given now. I do as well as I want to, and that’s enough for me. If it’s not enough for someone else then they can take the degree themselves. Rawr.

So game plan for now as far as career goes. Move west-ish to be closer to family. Ideally this will happen in a year or so, once I have obtained my second degree. Upon completely my degree I can begin analyzing what direction I want to go with my career. Continuing to teach? If so, what area would I like to teach in since I’ll have more avenues open to me. And if not, what area in the industry I would like to pursue since, again, I will have two degrees to work with.

So that area is tidied up a bit. I at least know that for now Florida is where I will stay. So my long term plans in that area are more solid, and I understand how they relate back to my goal of being with family. I’ll need to figure out the short term goals before too long, but I will save that for another day.

On ward to personal / health / spiritual stuff, since they’re all interconnected for me.

My Warrior Dash is still important to me. Even if it doesn’t feel like it right now, I know it is. I know I want to run it. I know I won’t do amazing at it. And I know that even if I’m bummed, that I’m ok with that information because this is my starting point. This is something I want to keep doing and getting better at, and so even if I don’t do amazing this first time, I know I’ll only be able to do better from here.

I want to keep training. I want to keep improving. I want to keep going to the gym and seeing new lines and contours on my body. I want to watch the muscles flex in my arm as I lift a weight. Watching how the ligaments and skin shifts to preform the action. I enjoy watching, analyzing how the body is functioning, how such a simple action is so insanely complicated and intricate. I love it because I’m weird like that.

I love being able to prove to myself that I’m better than I was yesterday. How I can do an extra set of lunges. Bike a bit faster, run a bit farther.

I can remember the first time I went running while I was dating Warren #2. How I couldn’t run longer than 30 seconds. How I was so out of breath, how my legs burned. And even then I was proud of myself for doing it because it was further than I had run in I don’t remember how long. How I kept getting better, and better. And here I am running five minutes solid. Here I am about to run my first race.

It’s a good feeling. It’s been slow progress. Years worth of trying, and stumbling, and fighting depression, and Life getting in the way, and work being bitchy and needing to be backhanded a bit. But I’ve made it this far. I’ve refused to back down, and when I’ve fallen I’ve gotten back up.

Here I am sitting in a t-shirt my mom got me, sized XL and it’s a bit loose on me, when before it would have been tight. I want to keep moving forward in a positive, healthier direction, and the only way to keep doing that, keep moving forward, is to keep making the physical aspect of my life a priority.

Feeling better about myself factors into my personal and spiritual well being. If I being to let this area slip I know I will begin to slide back into depression. Those reasons will be different reasons, reasons other than financial stress, but depression is still depression, no matter the reason I am there. I don’t want to go back to that state. So I need to continue to walk away from it, to do things to combat it. And I think I’m ok with having physical activity as a priority, though I want to call it something else. Physical activity sounds lame, weak, hollow. It’s the part of school that was dreaded because you could never take a shower afterwards and had to sit in school feeling icky the rest of the day.

I’m not sure what to use in its place though. Hmm, through the powers of Thesaurus.com I think I’ll go with Physical Discipline. That sounds better than activity, exercise, or training.

I haven’t done much for Spiritual Growth other than dig myself out of self-pity and depression. But I think I did a pretty good job with that so I’m not going to let myself feel like a slacker. I do want to progress in this area though. I want to actually finish my Buddhist book, which I haven’t done yet. There are several things I want to do.

Honestly, I want to stop writing. I’m sort of written out at the moment. But I think I made good progress with myself. I feel less lost when looking at my daily life. I’m where I’m supposed to be, for now. So at least I know I’m not wasting my time. I’m meant to be here, not looking up plane tickets or selling all of my worldly possessions.

Here. Now. Florida. Work. School. Race.

Those are my priorities at the moment. At least as far as this post is concerned. Tomorrow I have the day to myself, so that will be another few hours of figuring out my life. But right here, right now, I’m on solid ground again, and that’s comforting.

Daily Post 060: The Last Day of Survival

Standard

Today seems like a blah day. It rained earlier this morning for about an hour or so. It was sunny while I had breakfast so I sat outside eating a full breakfast sandwich. Normally I only do one slice of toast with an egg, some cheese, and a few slices of bacon. Not today though. I did two whole slices of bread, a full egg sandwich, because I’m a rebel without a cause. Maybe I’ve been playing too many chaotic evil character in my Pathfinder games… It’s rubbing off on me.

It was a nice way to start the morning, but as I was looking off into the distance sort of spacing out I realized that it was still super cloudy out and that it looked like more rain. And wouldn’t you know, right now it’s raining outside again. I’m hoping it stops before 4pm which is the latest I can hang around before leaving for work.

I’ve biked in the rain before, but it’s always been after work. I would rather not do it before work. Being stuck in the computer lab while wet would be a nightmare since they’re so cold. I’m sure I would have ice crystals forming on me by the end of the night.

Today is my last day of “Survive the Week”. It’s also payday which leaves me in an interesting spot.

I had an email saying it’s my one year anniversary with Torrid, a clothing store. Ari has been wearing super adorable tops, and apparently that’s where she got them from. I took about an hour to poke around on the site and found some things I like. There’s also a bunch of Christmas savings and blah, blah, blah… Basically all these “reasons” why it would be ok to be irresponsible and spend money that I shouldn’t be spending.

Before I did anything I went onto my banking site to take care of the responsible stuff first. You know… just to see just how irresponsible getting new dress tops would be. I just got done buying all of my workout stuff, but the only “nice” tops I have are the ones from the Salvation Army…

Me: Stop justifying impulse buying. /pokes brain with a qtip.

So this is where things get sort of interesting. I have a paycheck today, and then one on the first of January. This paycheck is supposed to be used to pay all of my “first” bills, only… everything is current until the 1st. So… aside from car insurance and food I have no bills….

After calculating everything out and making my extra payment on the credit card I have $780 sitting in my account. I could get two tops, get the bike a super duper tune up, and pay Alex back for the furniture he gave me back in February when I lived with Joshua. All of that and I would still have extra money that I could put towards the card.

I admit, I’m no where near where I want to be with it. then again, when I was originally setting up my goals I wasn’t expecting the shopping spree I did for my gym stuff. I wasn’t expecting a $100 vet visit. I wasn’t expecting to have to by a few hundred dollars worth of bike stuff either. Or training sessions at the gym for my race, or the race fee itself. Oh yeah, and certification practice test books and the test fee, plus the gas money to drive to and from Jacksonville in a single day just to take the test. The cost of the hotel and gas money for when I went home this Thanksgiving… I really could go on and on listing out all of the things I have spent money on, and there is a small, tiny part of my brain that cringes while the rest of me stands up, puffing my chest out in defiance because hell yeah I spent that money.

I spent that money. I spent all of that and then some, and it was all on stuff that I absolutely love and cherish, and it’s all stuff that’s going towards making me a better me. It’s all stuff that I wanted to do. I’m not going to feel bad about wanting to run a mud obstacle 5k. Or getting warm clothing so I don’t freeze on my rides home. Or a spiffy cool purple and black bike helmet so I look badass as I dodge the cars that almost hit me.

The bike tune up is the last thing I’ve been kicking around inside of my head, and I was thinking about saving that until the new year. It was going to happen at some point anyway. Shane and I are thinking about doing our bike ride on the 21st or 22nd, so getting the bike tuned up this weekend would be a smart option. The chain has started skipping again on the higher gears, too. I think that has to do with not down shifting when I should have been, but I’m getting a better feel for it. I might have knocked something out of alignment, but if it gets fixed up with the tune up, I don’t think it would be a continued issue now that I’m getting better about my gears.

Something else I thought was interesting. I checked out the points I’ve earned at the bike shop so far. I’ve earned enough to get a free water bottle. But the nifty thing with that is after a certain point you start earning gift cards, which you can use on new bikes. If I saved all of the gift cards I earn from points alone I would get $440. That’s basically the cost of a new bike, and I think that’s how I’ll work it. I’ll keep Zane’s maintained and earn points for it, and then in June, after my second race, use the points to help go towards a new bike. My very own, super awesome, totally fantastic, the first one I’ve ever picked on my own, bike.

I like the way that idea feels inside of my head. It would have felt like I earned it rather than just randomly going out and dropping money. It would make the bike mean so much more to me.

I like the idea of having a handful of tops that I can wear on date night, or to work on the few days that I don’t bike. I guess it’s worth noting that I would get an extra $10 off the tops because it’s my birthday, plus everything is buy-one-get-one 50% off, and if I ship it to the store it’s free shipping. I mean… if I’m going to be irresponsible I should at least do it responsibly, right?

Me: Behave! /pokes at brain again

I like the idea of taking care of a debt that I’ve had listed on my to-do list for a while. I know Alex doesn’t expected to be paid back, but I want to pay him. And what a perfect time to do it. I could send a check or money order with a Christmas card for him and his girlfriend.

I’m going to sit on these ideas for a little bit, but that’s what I have going on inside my brain at the moment.

I also have grading that I need to do. It’s only eight projects, and since they were fairly good on the last turn-in I’m thinking they’re going to go pretty fast for this one as well. That would be fantastic. Not having to spend my whole morning grading.

Zane had taken out the trash and cleaned up the kitchen a bit before going to work, so the apartment wasn’t the disaster I was expecting when I got home. The first thing I did was text him saying thank you because it really did make my day insanely better. Since there hadn’t been much time in the morning I hadn’t even thought that he would have done anything before leaving to work. There’s a part of me that’s ashamed for having that mentality. For instantly thinking that he wouldn’t at least try to do something.

It’s something I plan to meditate on. I know it was unfair mentality of me to have.

I made some pretty significant progress on my commission, and after posting my previous blog I did a pretty good job of being ok. I wouldn’t go as far as to say happy. But I wasn’t depressed and I wasn’t as agitated, either.

I played Chime for a bit when I got home. After loading the dishwasher and running it. I also ate first since between 7am and 5pm I had only consumed 400 cal. Not cool. Zane packed a hookah when he got home. Not a flavor I super liked, but it wasn’t terrible. I showered eventually and ran back out to school with the car to retrieve my backpack. I didn’t feel like riding home with it. Guess that makes me a slacker.

I slept pretty well the whole night. Zane stayed up again. He had to make brownies for his potluck thing at work. I really feel like I’m just rambling at the moment. I don’t have a clear picture of today so far since I haven’t really ironed out my to-to list.

Grading, and I suppose cooking lunch. Zane wants me to cut up the veggies for him so he can cook the Shepard’s pie tonight. Showering might be a good idea… So there are things and stuff to do. It’s before noon so I guess I’m doing good.

It’s the last day. I got this. I can do this. I’m awesome. I’m… going to try my best not to crawl back into bed. It looks so lonely though, and it’s all rainy and stuff… We’ll see what wins out, nap time or productivity.

Daily Post 059: For the Love of Sandpaper

Standard

Arg. It’s early. And by early I mean 10am. I’ve been up roughly since six I think, which is when Zane came to bed. He stayed up all night playing Fallout. He didn’t do any of the things he said he would do. He left food out on the counter all night so there’s no dinner for tonight.

I’m trying really hard to not be a grouch about any of this. I’m trying to remember that he DID cook dinner for us last night, and that he DID pack a hookah with the flavor that I wanted. Kiwi and lime. It was amazing.

I’m trying to remember that we DID have awesome cuddle time on the couch where we watched two episodes of Beautiful Bones before I went to sleep because I had to be at the gym early for training.

The food bothers me. I hate wasting food. We had to throw chicken out because it was left in the fridge too long without being cooked. We have fresh veggies that he’s suppose to use in a Shepard’s pie that are going to go bad soon, and I know he’s not going to cook tonight because he has to make brownies for work. And I feel mildly guilty because I’m pretty sure I’m not going to like the pie when it’s cooked because I’ve never liked Shepard’s pie, ever, and I’ve told him that. But I agreed to try it anyway because I’ve never had his.

But what happens when I don’t like it and he gets tired of having to eat it by himself? Most likely it will sit in the fridge and then get thrown away, which sucks because that’s basically setting money on fire.

I don’t want to be unhappy or bitchy or grouchy or anything negative. I want to go back to last night before all of the responsible stuff didn’t get done and the kitchen was clean and I was happy with how my day had gone and I felt good.

I slept most of yesterday, which was amazing. It’s the first time in a while that I indulged in that. Being a slacker. Listening to my body. Giving it the break it needed and deserved.

I biked to school, I found a new blog to follow. I cross stitched a bunch and prepped a bunch of threads so I can keep working for a while. I biked home without my backpack and felt like I did really well. I wore my new jacket and loved every second of it. It’s nice and fluffy on the inside and feels amazing.

I went back out with the car after showering to retrieve my backpack and to run to the store for cookies. Friday is my last lab before the holiday break and I wanted to get something for the students. So yeah. Christmas cookies because who doesn’t like the gift of diabetes?

I had almost an hour long conversation with one of the guys in finals. We’ve chatted off and on throughout his time in the program, but this was the first time we really had an in depth conversation. We talked about freelance, then meandered around to the topic of why I was still at the school and what I personally wanted to do, which led to talking about the other degrees I plan on getting, the one I’m currently working on, and ultimately how I want to teach aikido at a dojo, which totally has nothing to do with anything I plan on going to school for, or anything to do with what I have currently done with my degree / career / life.

I summed it up by saying that I enjoy learning things and then showing people all the cool shit I’ve learned. And that I think is really my main goal in life and where I get my fulfillment. Showing people cool stuff and helping to build them up and showing them they can be awesome and do really cool things too.

I ended up going back home after dropping the cookies off at school. I ate dinner and relaxed because I felt like I had done well yesterday. Not crazy productive, but productive enough to rest on my laurels.

And now here I am. I didn’t get to have breakfast or coffee. Zane said he would wake me up, which he did, but not early enough to have breakfast or any real time to enjoy the morning.

I made it to work to drop my bag off then headed to the gym where I worked out. It was good. I feel like I did well. The squats and lunges aren’t destroying my legs as much so I think there’s improvement there. The ab work doesn’t leave me feeling like I should curl into a fetal position and cry until someone shoots me. I can see more muscle definition in my arms as I watch my form in the mirrors. I can see the changes in my body and I like them. It makes me feel like I’m doing well and that makes it easier to keep going.

I sat outside for a little bit. It was an overcast morning. It looked like rain. I finished off my bottle of water while the breeze cooled me off and I inwardly groaned about the thought of having to bike against the wind. But it let up and the ride back to school wasn’t bad.

I think I need to put air in the tires. It feels like the bike is dragging and that even though I’m biking well, that I’m not getting as much response from the bike as I should. I don’t have a portable bike pump, which is something I really ought to get. And I don’t have a way to check the tire pressure, so for now I’m sort of stuck with just a hunch. But I’m pretty sure more air would improve my biking experience. I think I need to raise the seat a bit, too. I don’t feel like I’m extending my legs as much as I was before and that I’m losing power because of it.

Anyway. I clocked in once I got to school. I checked my email, but it’s too early to have gotten anything new in my work inbox, and all of the stuff that was in my personal inbox was junk. Yay Christmas ads. No I don’t feel special for receiving them. Please stop sending them and cluttering up my virtual office desk. K, thanks.

I saw Seth and Ari for a little bit. We checked the schedule for January since the preliminary is out. CRI1 is going to be 9am to 5pm supposedly. I’m so used to the pm schedule that thinking about having to be awake so early in the morning for work, before the gym, sucks. I don’t want to do it. I can never just be happy with the work schedule. XD

Shading and Lighting is schedule for, literally, 4 labs. That means Frank and I would be on campus from 9am until 1am… Which isn’t going to happen. There’s no way that we can work a 16-hour day. Like, it’s physically not possible for us to cover that with the amount of people we have.

I know Tony has already requested that the lab be moved into a powered lecture hall to accommodate the large class size. That would mean there would only be one lab, which is doable. But it would most likely be at night…

Down side to that, because this whole situation is just full of downsides… I would be working a flip schedule. 9am for my class one day, then 9pm for the SAL class on the other days. That’s going to not be cool. I know, from experience, that I’m going to be tired constantly and that will affect my ability to get to the gym, and with my race less than 60 days away I’m not going to be ok with anything interfering with that.

There’s really nothing that I can do about it other than stew at the moment. Until I know what the changes are going to be all I can do is speculate and worry and be angry over nothing. Maybe lab will happen before lecture and it will be more of an am schedule and things will be fine. Who knows? I certainly don’t, so why am I assuming that everything will be awful?

Why is it so easy to jump to the “Everything is awful” spectrum?

So what if the trash didn’t get taken out, or the litter box cleaned, or the food put away, or the kitchen cleaned, or the trip made to Wal-Mart?

None of those were my chores. None of those were things that I said I would do. The world didn’t end because they didn’t get done. So why is there so much discontent inside of my brain because of it?

Because I had pictured a reality that is different than the one I woke up to, and that difference is like sandpaper inside of my brain, rubbing against my skull, creating this grinding noise that I can’t think past. The world is wrong. It’s different than what it should be. It must be corrected. It must be set right in order for this sound, this discord to end.

If I had known it wouldn’t get done I would have done it myself rather than going to sleep. Most of those things wouldn’t have taken very long to do.

And this is where I feel like I’m not a team player. Or rather, this is why I dislike team projects and other people and delegating tasks to someone else. I feel like this is part of why I have trust issues and prefer to rely on myself rather than believing in others.

It’s because of the times like this where things don’t get done, or aren’t completed the way I think they should be. I’m picky. I’m demanding. If you say you’re going to do something I expect it to be done when you say you’re going to do it. And when it’s not it makes me feel validated in my reasons for not wanting to trust other people. For not believing someone when they say they’ll do something. Or when it’s half-assed and I have to go back and do it myself anyway. What was the point of asking then? Instead of being done once it had to be done twice and I had to waste time before doing it myself anyway.

And it’s not like this is the first time and I’m blowing it out of proportion. It’s consistent enough to me to not be shocked. Just mildly disappointed, which makes me frustrated with myself because why should I be disappointed? I knew this was a likely possibility. And in reality, it doesn’t matter so why waste energy on it?

The trash will have to be taken out eventually. The litter box will have to be cleaned. What does it matter if it happened last night or tonight?

I guess it bothers me because I feel like I’m going to have to do it when I was looking forward to not having to worry about stuff. But by not worrying about it those things didn’t get done. So it feels like a failing on my part. I didn’t adult good enough and because of that I feel like the apartment is a disaster and I hate, loath, despise, being in an icky, unclean environment.

Me: Please apply more sandpaper to my brain. There’s not enough friction going on in my thought processes at 7am. Thanks. I appreciate it. : D

For now I’m at work. For now I’m not going to worry about it. Or care. Or even waste more effort thinking about what needs to happen later. Fuck it. I’ll take care of it after my lab. After my bike ride home. After my shower. Most likely before I eat since I’ll have to clean the kitchen before I can do any sort of cooking, but still. It’s not something I’m going to spend effort on right now because there’s literally nothing I can do about any of it from where I’m at other than be an angry, frustrated ball of rage, which I don’t want to be.

I want to feel good about my workout. I want to have confidence in myself that I’ll be ready for my race even though I’m starting to feel like I won’t be because that’s part of the cycle with goals. Self-doubt. Fun times… said no one ever.

I’m going to go and cross stitch so I can feel good about making progress on my commission. I’m going to make a new play list to listen to for my ride home. I’m going to enjoy my day because there’s no reason for me to not enjoy it. Aside from that I don’t now what I’m going to do, but I think that’s a pretty decent to-do list.

Task 1: Wake up.
Task 2: Be happy.
Task 3: Go to sleep.

One of out three down. Time to go drop kick those other two in the face.

Daily Post 052: The Weekend

Standard

This morning is dreary, cloudy. My toes are a little chilled, but not as bad as they could be. At the moment the day matches how I feel, or maybe it’s I who matches the day.

Low. Slow. Going back to sleep might be nice but I really don’t have interest in doing that. I don’t feel like I have much interest at all at the moment, and maybe that’s because I’m still working on my cup of coffee. Why does caffeine take so long to kick in sometimes? ;-;

It just sucks. I feel like it would be easier to want to do things if there was some sunshine. Something to help me get going. But there’s not so it’s taking a while for my motivation to start up.

This is where I’m at currently…

57771451

Saturday was a super busy day. I woke up, had something quick to eat, then loaded the car up with everything I needed for the day. It took two trips on my own to get everything out there. I went to the laundry mat I normally go to, but they were doing work on the parking lot, repaving it. Even though the businesses were still open I decided to go to a different place instead. Tripping over wires and lots of people I didn’t know didn’t seem the best way to start the day.

I ended up going to the laundry mat that John goes to instead. I didn’t know it was open 24 hours. That’s kind of cool. The machines are also cheaper than the ones at our apartment now that they’ve raised the rates. I may be going there to do laundry from now on. Especially since some of the machines here still don’t switch to cold water, and I’m not about to risk messing up all of the workout stuff that I just dropped a billion dollars on.

Which, I’ve come to a peaceful resolution in regards to having spent all of the money that I have recently.

First off, it’s out of my system. I have no urge at all to spend on anything else because I really don’t want anything else. I’m back to being content with what I have, and happy that the things I do have are practical, functional things rather than stuff that’s going to collect dust.

Second, I think of all of it as gear, battle armor. I need this to help me train for my race and to get ready for the military, if I actually do finally decide to go that route. I’m not going to let myself feel bad for buying quality armor to help me win the battles I want to fight. I’m not going to feel bad for replacing stuff I should have replaced years ago. I am content with my investment. Should I have used the card? I don’t know. There are different schools of thought for that.

My school of thought; it’s helping me move forward on goals I want to achieve. It’s keeping me motivated and feeling good. It helps me feel like it’s worth going to work because there’s a pay off for me, not just my debt. I’m able to have thing I want, not just things I need. I’m not going to allow myself to feel bad about investing in myself and the things I care about. I’m worth it. End of story.

I didn’t sacrifice any of my other financial obligations. I still paid all of my bills on time. Even over paid on the card still. The only thing I sacrificed was how quickly I am going to reach the goal for paying the card off. I’m not going to be able to get it done by the end of the year like I wanted anyway, so waiting an extra month or so to be done with it isn’t going to kill me. It’s a choice I made and I’m ok with that choice.

Thirdly. December is my birth month. Plus there’s Christmas though Christmas isn’t a big deal for me. I’m not going to be buying anything for myself because I don’t want anything else. All of this stuff, the new pants, the new running shoes, the bike helmet and light… All of the money I’ve recently spent on myself, that was my birthday and Christmas and all of rewards for the certification and everything else that I needed to give myself a pat on the back for.

The only other things I might get are new panties. And those are more of a necessity rather than a reward. Maybe… maybe, new headphones. I doubt it though.

Anywho… Yeah. I’m ok with the money thing. I love all of my things. The compression pants worked amazing on the cold night I biked home. I love the Lucy tops and the over shirts I got. The new bandanas are great and I’ve gotten compliments about them. I gush over my new running shoes anytime someone mentions them. The thicker sole works great for biking and running. The new armband does fantastic at the gym. Everything has worked out exactly as I wanted it to, and I don’t feel like I have wasted a single penny on any of the purchases.

It was a lot. But I’m worth it, and February, when I do amazing in my race, will prove that none of this was a waste.

Going back to the recap of my Saturday… I worked on the character sheets while the clothes washed and dried. The laundry mat didn’t seem to have wi-fi so I couldn’t send images to Zane, but I was content with my work and sat for about 10 minutes before the clothes finished drying listening to music.

After the laundry was done I went to the gym. They are doing a food drive so I was able to donate all of the nonsense form the pantry that no one is using. Huzzah!

I ran, did a round on the machines, and wrapped up with yoga. I showered there, changing into fresh clothes, then headed out to my car.

I messaged Nicole before going anywhere to make sure we were still good for lunch. She said yes, but that she might be a bit late. That was fine. I told her if I was early I would cross stitch while waiting for her.

With those plans confirmed I drove over to Dick’s Sporting Goods to see about exchanging two of the gray compression pants for black ones. The cashier I had was super nice. She offered for me to see if there were any pants in my size to exchange at the store, otherwise she would refund me the cost. The store only had one set, but I figured I could reorder the second one online when I got home. She refunded me my purchase to a gift card, so I’ll be using that to pay once I actually do it.

With that as done as it could be I went to school where I set up my laptop. I messaged Zane the images of the character sheet so he could approve them. I logged my workouts. I got caught up on my personal email and wrote a lengthy response to a blog I found. By then it was time to meet up with Nicole.

We had a fantastic lunch where we chatted for about an hour and a half. I had a southwestern chicken mex bowl thing… it was amazing. So much so that I looked up a recipe for southwestern salads, which is one of the meals I’ll be doing this week.

Once Nicole and I parted ways I went back to school. I finished working on the commission for Marcus and sent him over images for approval. He loved it and gave me the green light to move on to phase two, which is making the actual pattern and figuring out the colors. We’ve already talked about the base color pallet so I feel like this part of the process will move fairly quickly once I actually begin work on it. That’s the main goal for today.

I was going to donate my old clothes to Salvation Army, and mentioned to Zane I was going to do that before heading home since I was pretty much done for the day. He mentioned going to Goodwill would be the better option since Salvation Army donates to anti-LBTG groups.

I don’t mind donating my clothes else where, Goodwill is super out of the way though, so I didn’t want to drive all the way out there unless there was another thing on my to-do list I could cross off while taking care of the clothes. Since there wasn’t the clothes are still sitting in the trunk of my car. At some point I will take care of them. Most likely won’t be this week though. I might put them in the re-use section of the storage unit since I want to go there this weekend for a few things.

Zane loved the character sheet. Ok, maybe love is a bit too strong of a word, but he liked it. Pretty sure I forgot to mention that.

Hannah came over Saturday evening. I ended up taking a nap when I got home since I was tired from being up so early and out and about for so long. When she came over we went out to the sports bar so we all could eat, then came back to the apartment and watched Spirited Away.

We chatted a bit about her possibly moving in once John and Trevor move out. It would lower the rent she is currently paying, she would be in a cat friendly environment, closer to school, and wouldn’t have to go through the hassle of finding a new roommate for six months since she graduates soon.

I’m not sure if she will move in, but I would be ok with it if she did. Saturday night helped us mesh a bit more. I think she looks at Zane and I as mentors for adulting… that’s a scary thought…

So that was Saturday. Social. Productive. Good.

One of the things I saw on Saturday as a post on Facebook from a few friends about a stage fighting group. Like, renaissance sword fighting. Sort of like larping, but not.

It looked so cool and fun. And I saw that the group had a meeting scheduled for Sunday. I messaged one of my friends who was listed as “going” to the event to make sure she would actually be there. She said she would, so spur of the moment I made plans to go.

That meant Sunday I had to wake up pretty early to get all of the chores done. Zane and I meal planned a bit when I woke up. He was sort of grouchy though, so as soon as we were done I left him alone to sleep. I showered, dressed, then headed out to the produce store since the Internet said they opened at 8.

Wrong.

On Sunday they open at 9, Google. Thanks for messing up my morning.

It actually wasn’t that bad. Instead of starting at the produce store I went across the street to Publix to do the other portion of the grocery shopping. It was pretty expensive compared to what Zane and I have been spending on grocery.

I needed to stock some stuff for my stash at school, so that meant a case of water, tuna lunches, shakes, and protein bars. I needed a new bottle of multi-vitamins, along with all of the stuff to make my homemade almond bars. Those have been an amazing snack to have when I get back to work from the gym, so I want to keep a supply of them handy.

I was actually pretty happy it was my turn to get groceries since a lot of the stuff was specifically for me. With that done I had enough time to come home and put the food away and sit for a bit. I hate it when you get weird pockets of time like that. Too much time to do nothing, but not enough time to do much of anything… So frustrating.

I used it to have coffee, since I was out of creamer when I woke up, and poked around online for a bit.

Eventually it was time to get going to make it to the stage fighting meeting on time. I was worried about getting lost, but I found the park easy enough. Now that I’ve been there it’s super easy to find. I got there before my friend did which made me a little added to my nervousness. I didn’t know anyone else. But there weren’t a ton of people at this meet, and all of them were super nice.

I had to fill out paper work saying I wouldn’t sue anyone if I died. Yay legal stuff. We did some stretching which my body was totally ok with. They had planned to record during this meet and since some people were missing that meant there wasn’t really anyone to pair off with me and start my training. But that didn’t phase me. I enjoyed being able to sit and watch. I actually helped my friend and another girl write out a new fight.

It was so cool. They were using staves, which is a lot like the jo in akido. As they were going through moves and figuring out what they wanted to do I was able to make suggestions and there were two places where they were stuck, not sure where to go from where they were at and I was able to help give them ideas based on what I would have done if I were in their situation.

So much fun! I can’t wait to actually be part of it and writing out my own fight sequences. I guess the group does performances at different events. Next weekend they are doing auditions for an event that is coming up, so I most likely won’t be able to start training then either, but I still plan to go and watch for a few hours. Another slow introduction day sort of a thing.

My hands physically ached to hold one of the staves and I could feel my body mentally going through Fey’s motions as she was “fighting” with Marissa.

One huge plus is that this is free. No membership fee, no sort of charge at all. The provide the props too. The most I would have to buy are a pair of gardening gloves.

It’s outside in a gorgeous park, and it’s physical, moving, interacting. I could feel the energy between Marissa and Fey as they were practicing their routine. I can’t wait. I feel like it’s going to be a lot of fun. And since they meet on Saturday / Sunday I ought to be able to go to most of the meetings, even when I start going back to aikido in the new year.

They also do “garb day” which is where you dress up in your renaissance gear, if you have it. It’s not required for the practices, but I’m pretty sure some sort of costume is needed for the performances. I’m not sure if those are provide or if you are expected to have your own, but at the moment I don’t care. It just seems super fun and I’m not worried about preforming, just participating at the moment.

Fey was totally decked out in her gear. Makeup and all. She was a Christmas elf, with red pants, white fur covering her boots, a long sleeve green top with a leather vest over it. She had a staff as her main weapon but also a few daggers. She had white contacts in, with super dark red hair. She looked fantastic.

Zane is interested in going with me, but I’m glad he didn’t go this first time. I think it wouldn’t have been a good introduction for him. While I liked sitting and observing, being on the outside and slowly taking everything in, I know he would have gotten bored with not having anything to do. He would have wanted to jump straight in and do things. So he’s not going to be going with me to the second meeting either, the one with the auditions, but he is interested in going with me when the actual training begins.

The meetings are scheduled 10am to 2pm, but I only stayed until 12. It felt like a good time to leave. I was already getting hungry at that point. Zane and I chatted when I got home, even cuddling for a bit. I was tired. So much social…

We went out for sushi since we hadn’t had a date where it was just us. It was very low key which I liked. Hannah was supposed to work, but I guess her hours got cut so she wasn’t there. I feel like I should mention that going out for sushi was my idea and not Zane’s.

When we came back to the apartment I laid on the couch with Zane as he played Fallout. I slept for a bit before moving to the room where I slept longer. I woke up around 5pm which is when I went back out to finish the grocery shopping.

We need a few more things, like lunch bags, which I didn’t realize until I got home and wanted to divide up the meat. I may try to go to the Publix for it today before going to the gym. Get a few extra miles into my day. But I’m not sure yet. Still sort of low key.

I spend half as much at the produce store as I did at Publix. I’m right at where I wanted to be for the food budget though. So while it’s more than what we have been spending, it’s still within the range we set, so we’re good.

I didn’t do much with the food other than put it away. I went back to the room with Scarlet and slept more. Last night was Trevor’s Pathfinder game, which I’ve actually backed out of. I’ll keep playing in Uke’s game, but there was no way I could have make it through last night’s game with how burned out on social time I was. I’m still sort of feeling that burnout today which might be another reason being motivated is hard.

I woke up again and came out of the room for water. At that point everyone was ready for food. We ordered pizza, which I paid for with the card and everyone chipped in a bit of money towards the total. It was more than I wanted to spend, but at least there was help in covering the cost, and I didn’t have to worry about the kitchen being a mess or full of dirty dishes later.

Zane stayed up pretty late. At the moment we’re not really fighting, but we’re a bit disconnected, another factor into the lack of energy I’m sure. But we’ve been talking since I woke up and things are going better.

I feel better for having written even though it wasn’t about anything of any real importance. I don’t think today is going to be all that crazy productive. It’s already noon. I’ll most likely head out around 2 or 3 so I can get to the gym. I’m going to stick with two minute intervals for running today, but I’m going to increase how many of them I do, so I’ll be getting more time and distance in. I think that’s a good compromise. Next week I can increase the interval duration.

Anyway. I’m sort of bored with writing. The sun has finally come out. I think I’m going to go outside and finish my coffee in the sunlight and hope that whatever part of me that’s a dragon wakes up enough to actually do stuff today.

Weekly Saga 004: 11/16 – 11/22

Standard

I wasn’t able to get around to playing with my template this week, which is lame. I have lots of ideas for improving it so it’s not so blank and text heavy. It’s just a matter of making time to do it. Since I need to get the character sheet altered for Uke’s game on Sunday I don’t think I’ll be able to get to the template. Sad day.

So alas… Here is the slightly esthetically unappealing weekly saga template. I haven’t begun seriously paying down the credit card, or raising money for the St. Jude fund I have created for my Warrior Dash, but those are two things I’m going to begin tracking before too long.  :3

Daily Post 042: Date Night and All of The New

Standard

While today has been a fairly lazy and lax day, yesterday was anything but.

It did not start with pancakes like originally imagined. Actually, to be honest, it started with irrational grouchiness. Zane didn’t come to sleep until late, which woke me up. I stayed up for a bit, using the time to write my last blog.

Eventually I was tired again, around 5am. I went back to sleep only to wake up in the middle of a REM cycle because Zane had to call out of work. That meant he had to rummage around to find his notebook where he had written down his supervisor’s number, then flip through all of the pages until he found said number so he could text her after he had gone through all of the other call out procedures. Rummaging is a very noisy process. I could feel the frustration building inside of my skull like hot pressure.

When Zane came back to bed he wanted us to cuddle close and fall back asleep together. Trying to cuddle things that want to kill you usually isn’t good for self-preservation. I couldn’t fall back to sleep, again, and I didn’t want to be held while I was so volatile. I wanted to be left alone.

It didn’t help I was still having anxiety over the thought of date night later in the day.

There was a spat but we worked through it. We agreed that we would go back to sleep, and that the day hadn’t really started yet, so it wasn’t ruined. When we woke up again we would start fresh and have an awesome day.

And the day was pretty awesome once it got started for real.

Instead of pancakes we had burger royals. There was egg and bacon involved, so it counted as breakfast. We spent some time together before Zane and I drove to school so I could get the bike. I went to the gym where I ran around the track, minute intervals again, but that was it. I didn’t have time to do any lifting. We had the appointment at Verizon for the new phones at noon and it was already 11:10 by the time I was leaving the gym. I still had to get home and hopefully shower.

I biked home, rested for a few minutes while I drank a bottle of water, showered, then we were out the door, already running a little behind schedule.

The phone experience was great. The first thing Paul asked was if we wanted to try getting approved for the monthly payment plan again. I asked if there was any negative consequences for trying, to which the answer was no. So what the heck? Why not?

I’m so glad we did because for whatever reason Zane and I were approved this time. That meant we didn’t have to spend $400 up front on our phones. We’re able to roll the cost of the phones into our monthly bill over the course of two years. Huzzah!

We got all of that set up, which took a while, but was very worth it. Zane traded in his phone, but since it had the cracked screen he only got $20 for it. My phone is in much better condition. We will be mailing it in to receive credit towards our monthly bill, which we were told should be around $200. That’s about a month and a half worth of phone bill. Very cool. I got a case to go with my new iPhone 6. It’s a light lavender and white case. I love it. And my phone is the black one, which they didn’t have at the store last weekend.

Since Zane and I do not use our phones all that much we went with 1gig of data for this month. We’ll see how much we use, but I’m pretty sure it will be enough. I’m going to get into the habit of making workout playlists for the week and having them available in offline mode for Spotify, that way I’m not streaming or having to worry about the songs buffering while I’m working out, which is beyond frustrating.

With the phones taken care of we decided to go out for lunch at my sports bar. We haven’t been there for lunch in a while, which means we haven’t seen our server in what feels like ages. Lunch was fantastic. We discussed the rest of the day and potential holiday plans. We also talked about our plans for dinner and why I was still anxious over going to the sushi place. There was a lot of honest communication about both of our perspectives, and I felt way better about the evening plans that I had since our conversation on Wednesday.

After eating we went back to the apartment. I spent some time setting my phone up since I had a backup on my computer. Eventually I headed out again to do my errands, new phone in tow. We were still in the “I don’t know how I feel about you,” phase.

I started at the bank. I had to get money for Zane for my half of the PS4 he got last week. We decided since I was getting flea meds for the cats to take that out of the money I owed him, as well as his portion of the car insurance payment.

I guess I should mention that I paid bills earlier in the morning, you know, since I’m mostly responsible or something lame like that.

Anyway, started at the bank for Zane’s money and a money order for Trevor to cover my share of rent. Hopped across the street to the vet for flea meds, then went to the storage unit to put some books up.

For some reason the card swipe wasn’t reading my card. It kept saying that the area was closed and not deactivating the alarm on my unit. For a moment I thought about just leaving. It’s not like it was a big deal. I could drop the books off a different day. But I didn’t leave.

Instead I walked up to the storefront and asked one of the guys if the hours for the storage unit were different for some reason because normally the units are open until 8pm on Friday.

They poked around for a bit, but couldn’t figure out why the system wasn’t giving me access. I had just paid my bill that morning, too. There was nothing amiss that they could find.

They manually deactivated my alarm and said to stop by the front once I was done with the unit so they could reactivate my alarm. Score. Go go communication and not being a chicken shit.

I walked back, got the books and headed inside to the unit. While I was passing the re-use section I noticed two black TV trays. They seemed to be in good condition. I went ahead and snagged them. We don’t need them for anything, but they’re good collapsible tables that I could put my cross stitching stuff on while I’m stitching in the living room, or in my own room once February rolls around and I get to kick Zane out into the master bedroom leaving me with my very own dragon den once again, muahahahahaha…. I mean… yeah… Totally not looking forward to that or anything… >.>;

In all seriousness I really don’t need the trays. But they were free, and I have the space for them in the unit, so I stashed them in there, and if when February rolls around and no one wants them I can put them back in the re-use area and someone else can snag them.

So that was sort of cool. Free loot is always nice.

Once I was done with the unit I told the guys in the front of the store I was heading out. They turned the alarm back on, and that was that. I stopped by Fedex next, driving through rush hour traffic to get there. That was sort of a bust though. There was a person in front of me who was having some serious issues, so it was going to take a while for me to mail my latest cross stitch gift. I asked how long they would be open, which is 11pm, and figured I could keep doing stuff on my to-do list and stop back by later. Or maybe I would run across a different Fedex and get it taken care of elsewhere. Either was a valid option in my mind.

So that left me with going to the sports store to find a new armband for my phone. Since then new phone is so much larger than the iPhone 4, there’s no way my old armband will work. I stopped at Dick’s Sporting Goods first. They had a surprisingly lame selection for armbands, and none of their armbands would fit my phone while it was in its case.

Sorry for being a lazy human, but I’m not going to take my phone out of its case every time I need to use my armband, because that would be way more hassle than what it’s worth.

I looked around at their clearance stuff again, but didn’t find anything I liked. I did see some Lucy workout tops that are amazing. That’s the brand that my purple one is (the one I love). The down side… they’re hella expensive. Like $40 for one top. Plus your first born child.

They’re so worth I, though. The material is exacty what I like. They have a built in sport bra that actually has enough strapdown power to work, unlike most of the ones I find. And the color selection was pretty awesome. Dark red, a dark purple, and black. Ok, so maybe to normal people that isn’t an awesome color selection. But I loved all of them and stood in front of the display for a while after trying one of the tops on, debating and weighting the pros and cons to getting one or two new tops.

I left the store without buying anything, no tops, no clearance, and no armband which was the whole point of the trip. Instead I went over to Sports Authority, which is literally right across the street. Talk about keeping your enemies close. At least I didn’t have to travel far when the first store let me down.

The Sports Authority that I went to was the store where I got my compression sleeves for my shines and my old armband. Jeez. Realizing that I bought those over a year ago, while I was living with Clavan, really puts things into perspective. Because I had success at the store in the past I was hoping to find something I liked. I didn’t see anything at first. Just more of the same slip-in bands that I really didn’t like, but then I saw what looked like something sort of nifty. Curious, I picked up the box.

It was an armband rather than the sleeve that I currently have. What’s cool is that it’s a magnet. You put a super sticky magnet on the back of your phone / phone case and it hooks into an attachment on the armband. Basically you clip your phone on and go about whatever it is you’re doing. When you want to detach your phone you turn it 90 degrees to the left and it pops right off. No muss no fuss. No need to take the phone out of its case. And what’s cooler? There’s a bike attachment so you can clip the phone onto your bike. Or you can get a mount for the car and use it as gps. There’s a belt clip too, which seems pretty nifty.

I only got the armband, but I’m seriously thinking about the bike mount eventually. The associate was super friendly about it. I asked her if it came with the phone mount or if it was just the arm band because there were mounts being sold in separate boxes. I thought it would be pretty lame if that’s how the device was sold, but I didn’t want to get home and realize I only had half of the equation.

She opened the box for me and we both checked it out. The phone magnet was in there. Huzzah. She even let me test out the armband since I was worried that it wouldn’t feel comfortable or fit properly. It came with three different armband sizes. I threaded the one I wanted through the main piece and secured it around my arm, flexing and moving about to get a feel for what it would be like.

It’s a bit thicker and heavier than the sleeve I’m used to, but I like it. I think it will work pretty well. I was all set to check out when the associated asked ifI stillw anted to look around the store. I hadn’t thought about it honestly, but then I figured why not? I hadn’t seen their selection of clearance stuff. I might find something for cheap.

And this is where I’m going to go on a tangent and ramble for another four pages before getting on with typing out the rest of my day because this is where I have some hashing out to do. And of course it’s about finances because why would I worry about anything else in my life?

Zane had mentioned earlier in the morning how he didn’t want to offend me, or say something that could hurt my feelings, but that he really likes the changes he’s seeing in me. I like the changes, too. I like how I feel. I like how I can tell that I’m losing weight and gaining muscle. I like how I feel stronger when I’m walking, or even just sitting. I like how my clothes fit me differently. And I like how I’m doing all of this without the help of weight loss pills for gimmicky shakes and bars. I’m doing this the old fashion way because that’s how I got to the point I’m currently at. I want to change through sweat, maybe some tears, and preferably no blood.

There are a few things that detract from the feeling of awesomeness though. I don’t like is that two of my workout tops I’ve had since I was in college, so over four years now? And I only have two tank tops that I like wearing over my workout tops that I use to bike to school, and those I’ve had for a while, too. The blue one has sweat stains because I’ve worn it so often. One of my workout tops (we’ll refer to them as undertops) is more of a yoga top, so I can’t run in it. There isn’t enough compression to handle something with that much impact. I’ve been using it on the days that I only bike, but those days don’t happen very often any more, so I feel like I only have two undertops.

It’s weird feeling better, dare I say even attractive, and having grungy stuff that doesn’t make me feel all that awesome. Or stuff that I skip over wearing because I don’t think it will get the job done. In addition to that, the undertops are ones that I had when I lived with Warren #2. I remember the pink one (yes it’s pink… don’t judge me, it was on clearance when I bought it, it’s also the yoga top I’m not all that fond of) was the one I was wearing when I came back from a biking workout one night and he was mad at me because I hadn’t been home when he got home. It literally was an instance where he was mad because dinner wasn’t on the table.

There are memories attached to all of my things, good and bad, including the undertops. It would be really nice to move on and let them go. It would be really cool to have things that gave me positive motivation and a feeling of newness and a clean start.

I have the skirts and tops that I got from the Salvation Army, it just sucks because I really don’t get much of a chance to wear them now that I’m biking to school. I honestly don’t feel bad about having bought them because I only spent $20 for the three outfits I got and I still do wear them when I go out with Zane on date nights, or when I’m able to drive to school and feel like dressing a bit nicer.

With all of that in the forefront of my mind, how nice it would be to find fresh clean workout stuff to go with all of the other new things I have been getting, I went back and poked around at the clearance racks. There were several tank tops (overtops) that I liked. And they weren’t just black. They had blues, and greens, even a purplish red one. I didn’t see any shorts I liked, which I was ok with because I have the ones from one of my other shopping adventures that I’ve gone on this past month.

I tried the tops on. There were two styles, three tops in each style, for a total of six tops. I liked them. I liked knowing that they fit better then they would have just a month ago. I liked how they are colorful and new. I like the material they’re made out of because it’s moisture wicking and soft and stretchy. I like how they were marked half price because they were clearance.

I stood in the dressing room, looking at the six tops, wondering if this was impulse shopping and wrong. I knew the longer I stood there the more I would become conflicted. So… I got them, and the armband. And when I got home after having dinner with Zane I went online and got four of the Lucy workout tops like the one I tried on at Dick’s Sporting Goods. All four are black so they will match whatever overtop I wear, no matter what. And it won’t show sweat as much, hopefully.

That’s a lot of money. And I guess this is where I need to write everything out so I can figure out what it is I feel because right now there is tightness in my chest. Like I’m waiting for someone to berate me for my actions, because I feel I deserve to be berated I guess.

I bought new biking shorts, new workout shoes, a new bike helmet, a new headlight for the bike, the bandanas, and now a new phone, new armband, along with new over and under tops.

Lets not forget my half of the PS4. Oh, while I’m at it, lets add in the registration fee for the Warrior Dash as well as the cost for my Maya Certification test.

That’s a lot of indulging. That a lot of stuff that I didn’t legitimately need, except maybe the headlight.

This is where if I were listening to someone else explain their situation, I would be supportive. I would remind them of all of the things they had gone through, how often they decided not to buy something in the past. How often they actually are financially responsible and diligent, and how all of their financial obligations are still being covered even with the extra spending.

I would tell them they are investing in themselves and that while it might seem like a lot of money, if they have the money to spend, and they’re spending it on being a better them, then it’s money well spent. It’s money that’s going towards another goal that they’re passionate about. It’s something that will lead to feelings of fulfillment and accomplishment, better health, emotionally, spiritually, as well as physically. It’s going towards something they legitimately want to do and can have pride in. How is any of that a bad thing?

But what about being responsible and paying off debt? Shouldn’t debt come first before fun, before myself?

As long as you are meeting your payments then I don’t see anything wrong with it. If you can fulfill all of your obligations you should be allowed to get the things you want without feeling guilty for it.

And this is the main issue I have. Because I’m not someone else sitting on the sother side of the table explaining my situation over lunch, I have to feel guilty. I’m me. I’m Jupiter and Saturn mixed together. I’m a Sagittarius Capricorn cusp who happens to be an INFJ HSP. I couldn’t get more conflicted if I tried.

I see both sides. I can see how this was irresponsible and how I could have made due with the things I had. I can remember how I complained and whined and cried and raged over having to buy Zane ice cream two months ago. Or how my body would tense whenever I would think about having to purchase something that wasn’t on the shopping list. How going out to eat was a point of contention because I would be the only person paying and how it felt like I was bleeding out money only to have date night ruined by fighting.

And yet here I am buying a techy arm gadget and dropping over $200 on workout stuff… again…

Um… I’m pretty sure that’s hypocrisy. Just tossing that out there for you to maul over and feel bad about because you don’t deserve to feel good about all of the nifty things you just bought because you didn’t really need to buy them. The helmet Frank gave you might not have been super sporty, or an actual bike helmet, but it was a helmet and it would have worked fine for the rest of forever. You didn’t need to drop $60 on a new one. That’s six trips worth of ice cream, gone, on one item. And you can’t even justify that it was a need, because it wasn’t. It was purely an esthetic want that you indulged in.

I’m conflicted over this. I do feel like it’s an investment. I feel like I’m serious about my race. I think of the days where I only bike 7 miles as my “off” days. I look at my RunKeeper and if my miles are under 30 I feel like I’m slacking off. I beat Zane at arm wrestling last night, which I couldn’t do before. I’m starting to think about going into the Army again, once my second degree is done.

I feel like I’m worth investing in, especially if I’m going to get my money’s worth out of it. Having roughly a week’s work of tops means I won’t have to worry about having laundry done every three days so I have clean stuff to bike in. And I don’t want to half ass it. If I’m going to spend money I want quality stuff that won’t crap out on me. I know and trust the Lucy tops. I’ve had one for over a year and it’s been amazing. It’s my favorite top out of the ones I have. I know that even though they’re expensive, they’re worth the money.

I want to feel confident in my decision, rather than like I have to justify why I did it. I want to not feel like I’m going to be yelled at, or told that I’m selfish, and irresponsible, and impulsive. I want to feel like I didn’t do a bad thing. And there’s a part of me who is confident and secure in my choices and who feels my reasons are legit and that it doesn’t matter what other people think.

But there is another part of me who is insecure and nervous, and worried, and guilty feeling. I don’t deserve new things. I don’t deserve pretty and shiny and new, and I definitely do not deserve the amount that has been spent on me recently.

I don’t regret my choice. I just wish that the thought of explaining my choice to someone didn’t make part of me cringe like a beaten dog.

I don’t think there’s anything I can really do at the moment other than wait. The bandanas aren’t here yet. I had to wait 24 hours for the adhesive on the phone case to set, so I couldn’t go running today, not that I would have since I ran yesterday, but lifting could have happened. The Lucy tops won’t be here until the end of the week-ish. Maybe next week due to the holidays.

I can’t prove that it was an investment because I’m just sitting here doing nothing other than typing on my computer. Yep… totally getting a work out in as I scroll through the Internet…

How do you know when you’re being too harsh with yourself? On the flip side, how do you know when you’re being too lax? How do you know if something is a good choice or not. The right choice?

And I guess that helps me a little bit. There isn’t really good or bad. There are simply choices, and I have made the ones I felt lined up with what I want and what my priorities are.

I am serious about my race. I am serious about becoming a better me. And I don’t want something silly like feelings of denial and unworthiness to detract from my motivation.

I keep telling myself “later”. It’s almost like it’s been my mantra. I can have those things later. I can get my tattoos later. I can have new clothes later, after I’ve made “serious” progress. I can have my rewards later. Always later.

Well. It’s later, damnit. And my rewards are pushing me forward to another goal. Another accomplishment I have wanted for years. Another thing I will be able to hold my head slightly higher, stand slightly straighter as I say I achieved it. Scratched it off my bucket list. My first 5k mud obstacle of awesomeness.

We’ll see how long this pep talk lasts. I give it five minutes. XD

And since I’m still rambling… there’s a sensitive, girly, frail part of me that is pleased that Zane mentioned the changes. That he’s noticed. That he likes it. I was never doing this for him. But there are warm feelings with knowing that it pleases him. It does add motivation to my already pretty set determination. And that’s another thing I’m not sure how I feel about. But that’s something to ramble through another time. The main thing is that I acknowledge having those feelings and that they need to be processed at some point.

So yeah, I got pretty much a new wardrobe yesterday. I’m still conflicted over my choices, but less conflicted than I was. I want other people to approve of my choice. I want someone else, someone on the outside, to validate my actions, when really I should only look to myself for acceptance. It’s my money, my choices, my goals, and, ultimately, my consequences. I shouldn’t be concerned about what other people think. I should be concerned with what I think.

Do I like the things I bought?

Yes.

Ok. We’re done here.

Moving on.

If only it were that easy to drop the conflictedness inside myself. XD

I actually didn’t get around to having my hair bleached yesterday. I never made it back to Fedex either. I spent way more time on the armband / shopping adventure than I had originally intended so by the time I was checking out at the store I already had a message from Zane saying he was hungry and a little worried about me. I had been gone for close to four hours.

I had sent him a message earlier, just something cute saying I was messaging him on my spiffy new phone (which I love by the way). But he never replied to it. That’s most likely because I messaged his old number and not his new one… my bad random stranger for messaging your phone…

So there was a bit of miscommunication due to both of our phones still being in the process of being set up. I still need to set up my new voice mail. I’m sure we’ll right into other slight hiccups that we’ll smooth over, but nothing major has happened so far, and nothing happened to tarnish our night. I said I was on my way home and that as soon as I got there we could head out for dinner, which is what we did.

Hannah was our server, and it was actually a pretty enjoyable experience. The three of us chatted as she had time to. Since she was still at work she had other tables to take care of, but she was extremely kind, and as I said, the experience was a positive one.

At the end of dinner I asked Hannah if it would be ok to send her a friend request on Facebook, which she seemed completely fine with. Zane arrange to meet with her Sunday afternoon to get situated for taking care of her cat while she is out of town for the holidays, and that was that.

We came home where we found out one of John’s cats had gotten into our room and marked our comforter… again… Another thing I’m looking forward to with February. Not having territory BS with cats and our room being the battlefield.

Zane was upset when we found out about the blanket, and understandably so, since his blanket was the only thing marked. He directed that frustration towards me since I was the one who had left the door open. That sort of stung, but we ended up being ok and the night still ended well.

I went to sleep before Zane did, waking up when he came to bed, which meant I got to go out to the living room and play on the PS4 for a bit. There is a game called Entwined that I have played through once before, on the PS3 when RB had bought the game for me.

I loved that game. And still do. Zane and I bought it in the morning before going to get the bike and I played through a handful of the levels so he could see what the game was like. He said it looked cool but that he most likely wouldn’t play it. He thinks he would do badly at it since it’s more of a reflex game, but he said he had a great appreciation for the art style and that he was happy I enjoyed it so much.

I played through a bit of the challenge mode after I woke up, getting up to roughly 120 something. I need 180 to unlock the next challenge level. I was never able to get that high when I played the game with RB. I’m not sure what the chances of getting that high now are. I’m ok with playing through the story mode, though. Only three more levels to go before I beat the game.

So that was my Friday. Lots of stuff. Lots of internal things I still need to straighten out with myself, but overall I’m happy with it.
